Box Score
GENEVA, N.Y.-- Hobart dominated the offensive and defensive board, out-rebounding visiting Union by 16 caroms enroute to a 74-66 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association victory in Bristol Gym.
The Statesmen, 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the UCAA, never trailed after coming out of the gate like gang busters. Hobart scored the first six points of the game and built a 12-point advantage by the 13:44 mark on a three-pointer by freshman guard Mike Manning. Union used an 11-2 run to climb within three, but Hobart responded with a 9-0 run to balloon the lead back to a dozen points, 30-18. Even though the Statesmen took a 40-29 advantage into the locker room at the break, the deficit could have been a lot worse for the Dutchmen had it not been for the hot hand of sophomore forward Brian Scordato. Scordato netted 20 of his team-high 22 makers in the first half, including four three-point field goals.
Union, which has now lost two in a row for the first time this year and has been on the wrong end of the score in three of its last four games, tallied the first 11 points of the second half to knot the game at 40. The teams traded baskets to forge the games second tie at 42 before sophomore forward Tim Apuzzos layup with 15:21 remaining put Hobart back in front for good. The Dutchmen closed to within a single point three times, but the Statesmen responded to the threat each time. Clinging to a 55-54 lead at the 5:53 mark, Hobart outscored Union 11-4 over the next 4:22 to break the game open.
The Statesmens 46-30 advantage on the boards is the teams best of the season. Hobart took advantage of its extra shots by outscoring Union 20-6 on second chance points.
Manning, who made his first collegiate start, posted a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
