SCHENECTADY, N.Y.Devon Bruce pulled down 15 rebounds and scored 14 points while point guard Chris Murphy handed out nine assists to lead Union to a 56-48 basketball victory over Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association rival Rensselaer at Memorial Field House.
win not only snapped the Dutchmens two-game losing streak, it evened their UCAA record at 3-3 and their overall mark to 13-4. Rensselaer, meanwhile, dropped to 4-2 in the conference and 10-6 overall.
Union led from end-to-end as the Dutchmen opened the game with a 10-2 run. The Red Hawks, who trailed by 16 at the half, 30-14, came back to within three, 45-42, with 4:18 remaining on Matt Zepernicks layup. Union iced the win by scoring seven consecutive points enroute to a 52-42 advantage with 43 seconds remaining. Forward Ryan Freundlich contributed three points to the run with Joseph Mackey adding a layup and Murphy and Brian Scordato each scoring once from the charity stripe.
John Cagianello contributed 14 points and four assists to Unions effort while Zepernick led the Red Hawks offense with 15 points. Jared Hite pulled down 10 rebounds for Rensselaer and John Van Schiack finished with 10 points.
