Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#15 Union Downs Vassar 5-0

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 22, 2004) Union College, ranked 15th in the nation in Division III women's soccer, got two goals apiece from senior forward Brittany Cressman and junior forward Cassandra Mariani, and three assists from junior forward Erika Eisenhut, en route to a 5-0 victory over Vassar yesterday afternoon at Prentiss Field.

Union, 13-1-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the Liberty League, was offensive-minded throughout the game, putting 16 shots on goal, 11 of which were handled by Vassar's sophomore goalie Lisa Strumwasser. Vassar saw its record fall to 6-6-1 and 2-4 in the Liberty League.

Cressman (Duxbury, MA) scored the game's first goal at 7:16 into the game when Strumwasser came out of goal and the ball deflected off her leg. Mariani (Boonton, NJ), scored Union's next two goals, at 24:47 and 31:28, both off assists from Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY). Union closed out intermission with a 3-0 lead.

"I was very pleased with how we finished our plays today," said Union coach Brian Speck. "We were aggressive today and that was the goal of our forwards. Coming into the game we knew Vassar was much improved from last year and they would be well prepared from a coaching standpoint. Getting a conference win on the road isn't always the easiest thing to accomplish, no matter how well the team is playing."

The Dutchwomen kept the pressure on to begin the second half, and Eisenhut broke into the scoring column on an unassisted goal at 46:53 into the second half. She then earned her third assist of the afternoon on Cressman's last goal at 54:50.

Vassar managed only five shots on goal, all handled by Union's junior goalie Julie Gawronski (Dunkirt, NY).

Both teams will have little time for rest. Vassar returns to action Saturday afternoon at 4:00 against Skidmore, while Union, which is in second place behind Hamilton in the Liberty League, travels to Rensselaer for at 4:00 pm game.
