Dutchwomen Beat RPI, 6-0 to Capture Second in the Liberty League

TROY, N.Y.The Dutchwomen broke open a close game by scoring five times in the second half to defeat Rensselaer, 6-0, in a Liberty League contest.  Union finished second to Hamilton in the league with a 6-1 record.  The Continentals, which defeated the Dutchwomen, 2-1, on September 25, won the regular-season title and the right to host the conference tournament with a record of 6-0-1.  The winner of the four-team tournament will represent the Liberty League in the upcoming NCAA playoffs.

 

Junior forward Cassandra Mariani, who had given Union a 1-0  lead with an unassisted goal at 14:04 of the first half, picked up her sixth game-winning tally of the season.  Senior Brittany Cressman started the Dutchwomen's second half assault with an unassisted tally at 53:26 then picked up an assist on Marissa VanWoeart's goal at 58:47.  Briana Bailey, Mariani and Lauren Hutchinson all scored unassisted goals over the final 59:54 to round out the margin of victory.

 

Junior goaltender Julie Gawronski picked up her 12th shutout of the season to break Carolyn Stead's single-season record of 11 set in 2000.Gawronski, who earned her 14th win of the year, ranks third behind Shannon Powers (who won 16 in 1999) and Stead (who earned 15 victories in both 2000 and 2001) for wins in a season.  Her career record of 39-6-2 leaves her one game shy of Powers' all-time mark of 40 wins, set between 1996 and 1999.

 

The Dutchwomen, who are 14-1-1 overall and have allowed just four goals this season, finish the regular season with home games against Nazareth (Oct. 30 at noon) and St. John Fisher (Oct. 31 at 2:00).
