Box ScoreSchenectady, NY (Oct. 29, 2004) After a frustrating four-game winless streak to open the season Union broke into the win column with a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst, Friday evening at Messa Rink. Senior Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) led the offensive charge with two power play goals to give the Dutchmen their first win over the Lakers in three tries. The three-goal performance by Union (1-4-0) matched their total output over the past three games.
As was the case in the previous four games, the opposition got on the board first when Jon Asselstine jammed the puck past Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) at 11:22 of the first period. Webb responded four minutes later with his first of two power play goals on the night, taking a feed from Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT). One and a half minutes later the captain gave the Dutchmen their first lead in three games with another feed from Beal.
Mercyhurst's Jamie Hunt tied the game at 17:33 of the first period with an assist to Mike Kirby.
Freshman Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) came through for Union, scoring his second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner at 9:22 of the second period.
Things got testy toward the end of the game in front of the team benches and two five-minute game disqualification penalties were assessed to a player from each team along with two minor infractions to a pair of different players from either side. All four penalties were given at 19:42 in the third period.
Mayotte made 17 saves to earn his first win of the season for Union. Andy Franck made 31 saves for Mercyhurst for his third loss of the season. Both goalies were teammates with Sioux City of the USHL.
Union will look to make it two in a row when it hosts UMass-Lowell tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
