Box ScorePOUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.Mount Saint Mary scored nine of the first game's first 11 second-half points and maintained control of the contest by canning all 10 of its free throw attempts over the final 1:31 to hand Union its first loss of the season, 74-62.
The 4-1 Dutchwomen, who played without Katlyn Cunningham, four-year starter at forward who twisted her ankle in the closing minutes of the Garnet's win over the University of Rochester two nights ago, saw their one-point halftime deficit turn into an eight-point Knight lead in the opening 2:52 of the period. Four different players scored for the Knights during the run.
Junior guards Erika Eisenhut and Kate DeSorrento sparked a Union comeback by combining for all seven points during a 7-3 run that brought the Dutchwomen back to within two, 47-45, as Eisenhut converted DeSorrento's pass for a three-point field goal with 9:24 left to play. That was a close as Union would come, however, as Vanessa Lawson's three-point field goal with 8:18 remaining started the Knights on a 9-3 run that gave the hosts a 56-48 advantage with 5:15 on the clock. Mount St. Mary increased its lead to 11 points, as Oneisha Staples knocked down a jump shot with 2:08 left.
The first half was a see-saw battle that featured five lead changes and three ties before the Knights were able to take a 31-30 lead into the half.
Eisenhut hit a long three with 4:30 remaining to give the Dutchwomen a 28-25 advantage before Mount St. Mary closed to within one on a layup by LeSheena Brown at 2:40, and improved its advantage to 31-28 on Staples' jumper with 1:42 left. Sophomore forward Krystal Hammond's layup off Eisenhut's feed 18 seconds later closed out the scoring.
Eisenhut finished the opening half with nine points while Stacy Schultz and Staples each scored 10 markers for the Knights.
Mount St. Mary, which is now 6-1 (with its only loss being a five-point setback at the hands of NYU, the country's top-ranked team), got 21 points from Staples while Vanessa Lawson chipped in with 20 markers. Brown, meanwhile, finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Eisenhut's 19 points, four assists, two steals and five rebounds led the Dutchwomen. Nicole Cerniglia (13 points) and DeSorrento (10) were Union's other double digit scorers. Hammond finished with nine rebounds.
