St. Lawrence 56, Union 45

Canton, N.Y. -- St. Lawrence used its superior height advantage to score 21 of the game"s final 27 points over the last 6:24 of the game as the Saints snapped Union"s 13-game win streak with a 56-45 victory that handed the Dutchwomen their first Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association setback.

The loss left the Dutchwomen with a UCAA record of 10-1 and a game and a half lead over second place Rensselaer, which improved to 8-2 in the circuit with its 59-55 road with over William Smith. Union has a two-game margin over the Saints. There are three league contest left in the regular season.

Senior center Aliza Bogdanich netted eight of those points and also contributed some key blocked shots and rebounds to spark the host"s game-ending rally. The win allowed the Saints, the conference"s two-year defending regular-season and conference tournament champions, to keep their hopes alive for the regular-season title and the right to host the UCAA postseason tournament the weekend of February 27 and 28. St. Lawrence improved to 8-3 in the UCAA and 16-5 overall.

The Dutchwomen,18-3 overall, suffered their first loss since dropping a 57-56 non-league decision to the University of Rochester in Memorial Field House on December 11.

Bogdanich, who finished with game-highs in both points (18) and rebounds (12), also contributed five blocked shots to St. Lawrence"s effort.

Trailing by five at the half, 26-21, the Saints used an 11-1 run to open the second stanza to turn the five-point deficit into a 32-27 lead with 15:11 left in the game. Bogdanich started the rally with a layup and free throw and ended the Saints" run with a field goal. Union came right back to score 12 of the game"s next 15 points to take a 39-35 lead with 6:47 left.

Senior point guard Taryn Scinto started a 12-3 run by connecting on both of her free throws before Union forwards Kate DeSorrento, Katlyn Cunningham and Courtney Shepard followed with baskets. Meredith Pridgen hit a long three-point field goal for the Saints before Eisenhut answered with a tres of her own, and forward Emily Scott sank one of two free throw attempts as Union took a 39-35 lead into the game"s final 6:47.

Jessica Zuk, who had nine points, six assists and five rebounds, opened the Saints" game-winning run with a field goal with 6:24 left. Bogdanich then nailed her second three-point field goal of the game and Andrea Muszynski followed with a layup to give SLU a 42-39 lead with 5:19 remaining. Scott pulled the Dutchwomen back to within 42-41 with 4:01 left before the Saints put the game away by scoring the contest"s next eight points for a 50-41 advantage with 1:21 left. A Union turnover, a blocked shot by Bodganich and an offensive rebound by the Saints" co-captain all contributed to the game-winning rally.

The first half was a fierce defensive battle that ended with the Dutchwomen holding on to a 26-21 advantage. The Saints limited Union to just 32 percent (eight-of-25) from the field while the Garnet held St. Lawrence to eight baskets in 22 tries (36.4). There were a total of 11 turnovers and 35 rebounds, only six of which came off of the offensive boards.

Tied at 16 with 3:13 left to play, Eisenhut scored eight of the Dutchwomen"s final 10 points of the first half. The sophomore guard gave Union a 19-16 lead with a three-point basket off the feed of senior point guard Taryn Scinto then, after the Saints got a layup from Lauren Foran with 1:51 left, Eisenhut hit a three-point bomb with 1:39 remaining to make it 22-18. Her two free throws helped the Dutchwomen their biggest lead of the half, 24-18 with 1:32 left, before Foran knocked down a three-pointer for SLU . Scott scored on a layup with six seconds showing to give the Dutchmen their five-point halftime lead.

Eisenhut finished with a team-high 13 points for the Dutchwomen and, along with Nicole Cerniglia and Courtney Shepard, had five rebounds.
