Box Score

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Hilary Johnson (Arlington Heights, Ill.) scored twice and goaltender Kami Cote (Copperton, Utah) posted 30 saves to give Vermont a 4-0 victory over visiting Union on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The win was the first ECAC Division I victory for the Catamounts. It snapped a 25-game winless streak in conference play that dated back to the 2001-2002 season, UVM?s first at the Division I level. Vermont improves to 5-20-2 overall and 1-10-0 in the ECAC, while Union drops to 3-23-1 and 0-11-0. ?It?s gratifying to see them get a tangible reward for all the hard work and dedication. They?ve shown tremendous heart throughout their Division I experience and continue to make progress day-after-day,? said Vermont head coach Dennis Miller. Both teams played through a scoreless first period, despite Vermont out shooting Union 17-5. In the second, Vermont quickly took a 2-0 lead. Freshman Gabe Worzella (Madison, Conn.) netted her first career goal at 2:32 of the period, finding the back of the net with a slap shot over the shoulder of Union goaltender Dana Smullyan. Johnson followed two minutes later shoveling the puck past Smullyan in a scramble in front of the net at the 4:43 mark. Johnson scored her second goal of the game and 10th of the season on a put back effort of her own shot just before the end of the period to give the Catamounts a 3-0 lead at the second intermission. Junior Jackie Duerr (Longlake, Minn.) added her second goal of the year at 11:28 of the third period on assists from Jenny Hogan (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Marla Straight (South Hero, Vt.). Sophomore Lindsey Tilbury (Rochester, Minn.) recorded two assists on the night for Vermont, while Cote finished the contest with 30 saves to post her first career conference shutout and third of the year for Vermont. Smullyan stopped 46 shots in the Union net.
