Raiders hang on 1-0

Schenectady, NY (February 20, 2004) Union College (11-15-5, 5-11-3) was looking for a couple points here at home tonight. Instead, all they found was a wall in a 1-0 loss to Colgate. The wall was opposing goaltender Steve Silverthorn (Owen Sound, Ont.). The junior made 26 saves in the victory, (14-6-4) as the Colgate Raiders (17-9-5, 12-5-2) moved into a first place tie in the ECAC.

Both teams came out playing a sluggish first period, before Colgate sophomore J.R. Bria would score his first goal on the season late in the first period. The Dutchmen came out much more physical in the second period as they controlled the shooting lanes in front of Silverthorn, and out shot the Raiders 13-4 in the period.

Union would go on the power play with just 2:49 left to play, and Dutchmen coach Nate Leaman would pull sophomore Kris Mayotte (Finleyville, PA) with 2:01 left in the game for the two man advantage. However, Silverthorn would stand solid as the Raiders won for the first time since 1999 at Messa Rink. Mayotte made 15 saves in taking the loss, (8-14-5).

The Dutchmen will close out their regular season at home tomorrow night as they host the Cornell Big Red at 7:00pm, in which will be "Senior Night", as Union will honor #12 Glenn Sanders, and #2 Brent Booth immediately after the game.
