Freshman forward Kelly Lannan scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season and Mandy Hanson made them standup with a 44-save performance as Union captured its first ECAC Division I hockey victory by defeating Cornell, 3-1, at Frank L. Messa Rink at the Achilles Center.
The victory not only snapped the Dutchwomen"s 20-game losing streak, it brought a successful close to the Garnet"s home season in the team"s first year of Division I compeition. Union will finish the season on the road next weekend with a pair of games at St. Lawrence.
Lannan"s first goal of the game came at 11:18 of the opening period and gave the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead. Freshman Meghan O"Connor and junior Hannah Baldwin each picked up an assist. Following Vicki Hodgkinson"s tally at 10:29 of the second tied the game, Lannan picked up her first career game-winner when she beat Cornell goalie Beth Baronick while the Dutchwomen were on a powerplay at 14:39. O"Connor and Baldwin again picked up the assists.
O"Connor provided the Dutchwomen with some breathing room when she picked up here seventh goal of the year at 7:48 of the final period. Freshman Katelyn Aitcheson notched her second assist of the season. Cornell pulled its goaltender with 1:41 left to play, but Hanson was up to the task as she earned her second win of the season.
The Dutchwomen take an overall record of 4-27-1 into their final two games.
