Box ScoreROCHESTER, N.Y--Molly Flanagan scored in transition with 2:58 to play, snapping an 8-all tie and carrying the Dutchwomen to a 9-8 victory over the Yellowjackets in and Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association women's lacrosse showdown.
The victory left the Dutchwomen and William Smith (which defeated Rensselaer in its conference finale) with identical final conference records of 7-1. The Herons win the regular-season title and the right to host the upcoming UCAA four-team tournament by virture of their 14-8 victory over Union, which is now 11-3 overall.
Flanagan, who had 50 goals in Union's first 13 games, had been shut out to that point. Rochester goaltender Stephanie Bristol had 21 saves, 11 coming on shots by Flanagan.
Union, which is ranked #20 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association saw the Yellowjackets take a 2-0 lead on goals by Elizabeth Sack and Heidi Davies before the game was 80 seconds old. The Dutchwomen, who trailed scored three straight two by Julia Davis to edge ahead, 5-4. Davis scored her third for Union sandwiched between goals from Davies and Rochester's Kelly Glajch in the last eight minutes of the first half as the team went into the break tied at 6-6.
Rochester took a one-goal lead twice in the second half. Adrienne Sopinski scored on a free position shot 1:46 into the period before Liz Flanagan picked up the equalizer for Union. Rachel Holtzberg put Rochester ahead at 5:22.
The Dutchwomen finally got even at 15:00 when Tanya Davis scored. At that point, Union coach Linda Bevelander switched goaltenders, removing starter Rachel Beckman in favor of Corey Bralower, who stopped all four shots she faced.
Union held a 35-23 advantage in ground balls and a 41-17 advantage in shots (30-14 in shots on goal). Rochester drops to 4-9 overall, 2-6 in the UCAA.
