Box ScoreSCHENECTADY, N.Y.Pete Gross and Andy West scored three goals each and Dan Myerow picked up five assists as Union defeated Skidmore, 13-9, in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association lacrosse game on Frank Bailey Field.
It marked the first time since April 20, 2001 that the Dutchmen have defeated a conference opponent other than Vassar. Union downed St. Lawrence, 12-10, in 2001 and ended the conference season with a record of 3-3. The Garnet, which improved to 1-1 in the UCAA and is now 2-5 overall, finished with a 1-5 UCAA record each of the last two years. Skidmore fell to 1-1, 3-4 overall.
The Dutchmen took control of the game from the outset, scoring seven of the first eight goals. Gross got Union off on a 3-0 run as he opened the game with his first tally with 8:36 showing. Scott Snyder and West each found the back of the net before Rich Palmer got Skidmore on the board with 10:29 left in the second period.
Ben Beaty, Mike Sparico, Gross and Bryan Bendjy made it 7-1 in favor of the hosts before Matt Ward and Josh Lauren brought the Thoroughbreds back to within 7-3 at intermission.
Bendjy and Adam Nebenzahl traded goals with Skidmore's Tom Spinella and Micah Hawes-Sivitz to open the third period before three consecutive tallies by West, Gross and Snyder gave the Dutchmen a 12-5 advantage allowing Union to withstand goals by Jamie Hutson, Palmer and Spinella. West's third tally came with 9:11 left and gave the hosts a 13-7 lead.
Junior goaltender Will Tamm stopped 18 shots for the Dutchmen while James DeGorter and Pat Bouman combined to make just two saves.
