Box ScoreSchenectady, NY (Sept. 11, 2004)- The Union men's soccer team endured a physical match against SUNY New Paltz and broke a tie score with three second half goals to take a 4-2 win in the opener of the Union Tournament this afternoon at Garris Field. The Dutchmen got a two-goal performance from junior Ryan McAleese (Walpole, MA) as they improved to 3-1 on the season.
The Hawks struck first in the 22nd minute with a goal from Bryan Smith, who managed to knock home a rebound off the post. Union responded 11 minutes later when Michael Carey (Westport, CT) converted off a cross from Kelvin Martinez (Garifuna, Honduras). A back-and-forth battle continued and neither team could get the go-ahead goal before halftime.
Gregg Sinelli helped New Paltz regain the lead in the 55th minute when his intended cross deflected off a union defender and over Dutchmen goalkeeper Kevin O'Connor (Reston, VA). McAleese came through for Union though with his first goal of the game six minutes later with a header to the far post off a cross from the right side by Ari Davies (Barrington, RI).
Union take its first lead of the match in the 66th minute off an unassisted goal by Martinez; who's shot inside the penalty box rolled off the hands of New Paltz's goalkeeper Jake Lammers. McAleese added his second goal on a penalty kick in the 78th minute and the Dutchmen held on for the win.
Union will take on Mount Saint Mary on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. as the Union Tournament wraps up.
