Schenectady, NYJunior point guard Chris Murphy hit a three-point field goal with 0.03 seconds remaining to rally Union past Middlebury, 65-64, in a non-league basketball game at the Viniar Athletic Center. Murphy's shot, which hit nothing but net, completed a rally that saw the Dutchmen come back from a 14-point deficit in the last 13:40.
Murphy's third assist of the game resulted in a John Cagianello jumper that brought the Dutchmen back to within two, 64-62, with seven seconds remaining. Senior forward Devon Bruce pulled down his sixth rebound when the Panthers failed to convert the front end of a one-and-one and dished off to Murphy who drove the floor before pulling up just before the three-point line. Middlebury attempted a long pass, which was knocked down at Union's end of the court.
The win improved Union's overall record to 8-6 while the Panthers fell to 5-9.
A three-point basket by Mike Salek gave Middlebury a 48-34 lead before Bruce's layup with 12:28 remaining started a 10-2 run that pulled the Dutchmen back to within six, 50-44, as Cagianello connected on a three. Union got to within two, 55-53, on Murphy's three-point field goal with 3:48 left before Bobby Marcoux's layup and follow-up free throw gave the Panthers a five point cushion, 58-53, with 2:47 showing. Cagianello tied the game at 58 on one of two free throws with 1:06 remaining before a pair of charity shots by Evan Thompson made it 62-59 in favor of the Panthers with 28 seconds left.  Middlebury led by four, 64-60, with 15 seconds showing on two free throws by Adam Sinoway before the baskets by Cagianello and Murphy ended the game.
Bruce, who led Union with 13 first-half points, produced the opening period's sixth tie with a layup and follow-up free throw, 25-25, with 1:58 remaining. However, the Panthers scored the period's final six points as Simon Behan knocked down a pair of free throws, Mike Salek scored on a layup and Mike Walsh hit a jumper with six seconds remaining to give the visitors a 31-25 advantage at the break.
Bruce, who went into the game needing just 35 points to join the Dutchmen's 1,000-point club, led all scorers with 23 markers while Cagianello finished with 21 points. Murphy finished with a dozen. Middlebury placed three players in double digits as Marcoux had 19, Thompson 14 and Salek 10. Thompson's 10 rebounds were a game high as were Simon Behan's five assists.
