Box ScorePotsdam, NY (Jan. 21, 2005) Union dropped its third straight game at the hands of Clarkson by a 2-0 score at Cheel Arena. Despite holding a 36-22 edge over the Golden Knights in shots, the Dutchmen could not connect and as a result were shutout for the third time in their last five games. Union is now 10-13-1 overall and 7-6 in league play.
In the opening period the two teams exchanged shots and play went back and forth between zones. After serving a penalty for roughing Clarkson's Steve Zalewski raced out of the penalty box at 11:24 to create a two on one, firing a hard shot in on Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) that the Union netminder kicked wide for a long rebound that was picked up by a Dutchmen. Two minutes later Union applied the pressure but Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) had his chance turned away with a shot in front that Golden Knights goaltender Dustin Traylen pounced on. Seconds later a shot by Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) sailed just wide.
Clarkson started the second period on the power play because of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called against Michael Beynon (Nepean, ONT) for shooting after the horn had sounded at the end of the first. Zalewski cashed in on the opportunity 1:42 into the period off a centering pass from Shawn Weller. Mrazek slid down to deflect the shot but he was unable to get down in time as the puck snuck underneath him. Zalewski added an empty net goal with eight seconds left in the third period to ice the game for Clarkson.
Union outshot Clarkson 25-13 over the final two periods but could not get anything past Treylan who picked up just his third win of the season. Mrazek suffered his eighth loss of the season. The Dutchmen failed to score a goal in five of those games.
Union faces St. Lawrence tomorrow night at Appleton Arena in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
