Box ScoreHanover, NH (Jan. 28, 2005) Union dropped its fifth straight game with a 5-1 loss against Dartmouth at Thompson Arena. After trailing by just a goal following the first period, a defensive breakdown by the Dutchmen led to two goals by the Big Green who have now won six of their last eight. Union is 10-15-1 overall and 7-8-0 in the ECACHL as Dartmouth extracted a bit of revenge for a 7-0 loss last season at home. Union was outshot 41-30 for the game.
Dartmouth got an early strike at 2:21 of the first period to open scoring. Junior Mike Ouellette got his fifth goal of the season with a rebound shot in the slot through traffic that caught the inside of the left post to get past Dutchmen goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA). Union had its chance thwarted just over two minutes later. Senior Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) took a centering pass from Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT) on the right side of Dartmouth goaltender Dan Yacey. Webb was unable to get much on his backhand attempt providing Yacey with an easy save. In the same sequence Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) sent in a shot from the top of the left face-off circle but was denied. Mayotte prevented the Big Green from extending their lead at 15:30 with a big save. Oulelette fired a quick turnaround shot after a blocked puck rebounded to him but Mayotte's glove proved to be quicker.
Union was able to fight off a Dartmouth power play that carried over into the second period on a roughing penalty by Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH). The Dutchmen were then granted three straight power play opportunities but managed just one shot during the advantage as they finished 0-for-6 on the night.
Dartmouth extended its lead to 3-0 with two more goals that came during a defensive breakdown by the Dutchmen. Garret Overlock scored on the power play at 11:15 with a shot from the point that once again caught the inside of the post and glanced in. Ouellette developed the play from deep in the Union zone, sending the puck up top to Grant Lewis who sent it across to Overlock for the finish. The Big Green got a big lift 35 seconds later with their third unanswered goal from J.T. Wyman who finished in transition with a shot that was lifted past Mayotte from between the face-off circles.
Union finally responded with a goal by Webb at 13:00 to make it a 3-1 game. Webb went high on Yacey right in front of the net after taking a cross-ice pass through traffic from Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE).
Dartmouth came back in the third period with a goal at 6:39 to make it a three-goal deficit for the Dutchmen once again. Nathan Szymanski collected a loose puck in Union's zone and scored on a backhand shot after making a nice move to free himself in the middle. Lee Stempniak finished up for the Big Green with a goal just over a minute later.
Mayotte (6-7-1) made 36 saves in goal for Union while Yacey (4-5-1) made 29 saves. Union looks to get back into the win column tomorrow night when they face Vermont at Gutterson Field in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
