Schenectady, NY (January 29, 2005) Vermont completed a weekend sweep of Union with 3-0 win at Messa Rink Saturday afternoon. The Catamounts, who hold a 7-0 all-time series lead against Union, improved to 5-18-3 overall, 3-9-0 in ECACHL play. The Dutchwomen dropped to 3-20-1 on the campaign, 0-14-0 in conference outings.
Vermont struck first when Hilary Johnson took a feed from Frankie Williams and blasted a shot to the back of the net with just over four minutes left in the first period. The Catamounts dominated the early action, plastering Union sophomore goaltender Lauren Carlson (Rochelle, IL) with 17 shots in the opening twenty minutes. Meanwhile, the Dutchwomen managed just 3 shots on Catamounts netminder Kami Cote.
Vermont extended its lead to 2-0 in the second period when Kristi Anderson put back a rebound in front of net off a Kate Lesniak shot on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity. The Catamounts continued the assault on net in the middle period, besting Union 13-5 in shots.
Catamounts rookie Diana Fink scored the game's final goal at the 9:51 mark of the third period, upping Vermont's lead to the final score of 3-0. The Catamounts, which out shot Union 40-16 for the game, went 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Dutchwomen were unable to capitalize on any of their five attempts.
Cote picked up her second win of the weekend in net and her fifth on the season while making 16 saves. Carlson snuffed 37 Vermont shots in defeat.
The Dutchwomen will return to the ice Wednesday night, January 2nd at 7:00 p.m. when they host ECACHL-bound Quinnipiac. The game will pit the fourth match between the two teams this season, with the Bobcats owning a 2-0-1 edge in the series.
