No. 2 Dartmouth rolls past Union, 12-2

Hanover, NH (Jan. 7, 2004) Dartmouth scored six goals in the first period as they rolled to a 12-2 win over Union in ECACHL women's hockey action Friday night at Thompson Arena. The Dutchwomen were outshot 70-15 against the No. 2 ranked team in the nation. Dartmouth converted on five of its eight power play opportunities. Goaltenders Amanda Hanson (Brainerd, MN) and Dana Smullyan (Salisbury, CT) both weathered the storm as they split time in net for Union.  Hanson made 37 saves in 40:00 minutes of play while Smullyan, making her second appearance of the season, came up with 21 saves in the final period. Union is now 3-14-1 overall and remains winless in ECACHL play at 0-9-0.

Katie Weatherston, Tiffany Hagge, and Gillian Apps each registered a hat trick for the Big Green, who led 6-1 after one period of play. Freshman Stephanie Burlton (Coquitlam, BC) got Union into the scoring column with four seconds left in the first stanza on a power play goal for her first of the season. Teammate Ashley Kilstein (Cherry Hill, NJ) scored Union's second goal at 6:58 of the third period to give her six on the year.

Two of Weatherston's goals came in the first period.  She would tally her third with the final goal of the game. Hagge scored her first in the second period and added two more in the third. Apps scored one in the first and then two more in the second. Each scored a power play goal.

Dartmouth junior Cherie Piper extended her point streak to 19 games thanks to a career-high five assists and career-high-tying six points. Hagge added three assists for a career-high six points and Apps tied her personal best with five points. Goaltender Kate Lane made 13 saves in her eighth win of the season.

 

The two teams will tangle again tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
