Union falls to Boston University 6-2 in series finale

Box Score

Boston, MA (Oct. 15, 2005) Union suffered its second straight loss by a 6-2 score at the hands of Boston University this afternoon at Walter Brown Arena in the final game of the two-game series. Union came back to tie the game in the second period at 1-1 with a goal from Carli McNeill (Burlington, WI) but the Terriers responded with three unanswered to pick up the win. Union is now 0-2 on the season while Boston University improved to 2-1-1.

Five different Terriers scored with Kelly Karnan, Laurel Koller and Erin Seman each scoring their first collegiate goal. Karilyn Pilch got the start in net and allowed only two goals in her first action of the season.

Karnan started the BU scoring, tallying her first career goal at 13:07 of the first period when she buried a pass from Maeghan Ouimet by Union goalie Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL) who finished with 21 saves.

McNeill shot the puck through traffic and past Pilch at 3:11 of the second period to tie the game off a feed from Meagan Beck (Niskayuna, NY).

BU would take back the lead for good on Koller's one-timer in front of the net from Nicki Wiart. After killing a Union power play Wiart broke out of the zone and carried the puck the length of the ice before dishing to Koller in the slot.

Gina Kearns scored 1:03 later when she knocked in a rebound at the top of the Union crease.

Seman scored on a break-away when she streaked across the Union net, and put a shot just inside the near post over a sprawling Zirbel at 1:13 of the third period.

Union scored its second goal of the game when Meghan O'Conner connected on the power play at 6:54 of the third with an assist from Molly Garrett (Hingham, MA).

BU made it 5-2 when Nicki Wiart put another rebound in front of the Union crease past Zirbel at 18:02.

Kearns scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season, and second of the game, at 19:00 of the third period when she buried a rebound off a blast from Seman to wrap up the scoring.

Union finished 1-for-6 on the power play while BU was 0-for-7.

The Dutchwomen will have a week off from competition before hosting ECACHL foe Clarkson for a two-game series beginning on October 29 at 4:00 p.m.
