Schenectady, NY (Oct. 15, 2005)- Sophomore Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional) scored two goals, including the game-winner to lead Union to a 3-0 win over Hartwick this afternoon at College Park Field. Cuozzo now has eight goals on the season. The Dutchwomen improved to 10-1-2 with the win while Hartwick fell to 1-13 on the season.
Â
After going most of the first half without a goal Union scored three goals in a five-minute span to close out the half and take a 3-0 lead. Cuozzo scored the first goal of the game at 39:33. She ran on to a lead pass inside the penalty box from Kristin Tenety (West Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) and tucked the ball inside the far post past Hartwick goalie Ashley Taylor (Nashua, NH/Nashua). The freshman made 10 saves in the game.
Â
Less than a minute later Marissa VanWoert (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) converted off a Sara Wilson (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) corner kick to push the lead to two goals. Cuozzo scored her second goal of game at 44:31 slamming home a rebound shot by Molly Flanagan (Simsbury, CT/Loomis Chaffee). Taylor made a nice kick save on Flanagan but could not get back up into position in time to stop Cuozzo who was charging in on goal, unmarked.
Â
Union's defense complimented the offense and was stingy in holding the Hawks to just one shot on goal that did not come until the 49th minute. Â
Â
Taylor prevented Union from increasing its lead in the 62nd minute. Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) sent a low, one-touch shot in front off a cross from the left side. Taylor got down to stop the shot and grabbed the ball out of midair as it bounced up and headed toward goal.
Â
Taylor denied Union's Jenna Riley (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) in the 86th minute with a diving save in front. The Hawks were unable to rally around the play of their goalie though as Union went on to its fifth shutout of the season.
Â
Goalies Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY) and Kaitlin Graham (Orchard Park, NY) split time in goal for the Dutchwomen. Gawronski picked up her 10th win of the season and recorded one save. Graham replaced Gawronski with 12 minutes to play and did not record a save.
Â
Union outshot Hartwick 19-4 in the game and held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Union plays its final game at home on Tuesday, October 18 as they host Williams in a 4:00 p.m. match.
