Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

The Bell tolls for Union in 3-0 win over Williams

Box Score

Schenectady, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2005) As one of eight seniors playing in her final regular season home game, Amy Bell (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal to lead Union to a 3-0 victory over Williams in women's soccer action. The offense did its part while the defense handled things on its end, limiting the Ephs (9-3-0) to just five total shots and two on goal. The Dutchwomen (11-1-2) captured their third straight win and extended their unbeaten streak to five games.

The game remained scoreless throughout most of the first half as the teams did battle primarily in the midfield. Defender Caitlin Colesanti (Wyckoff, NJ) prevented a Union goal in the 28th minute, stopping a Cassandra Mariani (Boonton, NJ/Morris Catholic) shot on the goal line. Williams' goalie Sarah Ginsburg (Dalls, TX) came out to challenge Mariani for a loose ball but lost the challenge. Mariani touched the ball past Ginsburg and got a shot off but Colesanti was right there to aid her teammate.

Ten minutes later Bell made sure there was no stopping her scoring chance as she glanced a shot off the far right post and in for her second goal of the season. Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) started the play with a pass up field to Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) who connected with Bell.

Less than two minutes later freshman Ashley Brown (Plainville, CT/Suffield Academy) made it 2-0 at 39:32 when she tucked in her own rebound shot in front.

Ginsburg was replaced in goal for the second half by Clara Hard (Seattle, WA) who kept her team in the game early on with some nice glove work. Mariani could not catch a break in trying to tally a goal. She was denied once again, this time by Hard, just over two minutes into the second session off a Union corner kick. The ball bounced around the penalty box until Mariani collected it and fired a low shot on net but Hard reacted and smothered it. Hard came up big once again in the 59th minute when Union midfielder Molly Flanagan (Simsbury, CT) eluded a defender and sent a shot to the far post from 10 yards out. The Ephs goalie reacted quickly and was able to knock the ball away.

Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional) was finally able to soften Hard with Union's third goal in the 62nd minute. Senior Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) sent a cross in to Cuozzo who was denied by the goalie on her first attempt but was able to pick up her own rebound and tuck it into the back of the net.

Union outshot Williams 19-5. The Ephs did not record their first shot on goal until the 87th minute.

Ginsburg finished with three saves for Williams and Hard came up with five. Union goalie Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) made two saves for her fourth shutout of the season and second in three games.

The Dutchwomen are on the road from here on out during the regular season. Up next they travel to Potsdam to face Clarkson in a Liberty League matchup on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
