SCHENECTADY, NY--Freshman goalie Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME/ Kennebunk) posted six saves to lead Union to a 1-0 field hockey victory over Hartwick at Bailey Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Dutchwomen brought their season record to 8-7 and the Hawks fell to 7-6 on the year.
Union and Hartwick were at a stand off at half time with a 0-0 score. The Dutchwomen scored the eventual game-winning goal at 47:48 when senior Sarah Klopher (Hollis, NH/ Lawrence Academy) recieved a pass from Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO/ John Burroughs) in front of the goal. Klopher shot directly in front from five yards out high above the head of Hartwick's keeper, Ashley King (Barnstable, MA/ Barnstable). This was Klopher's third goal of the season and Trotter's third assist.
Hartwick had a chance to tie the game with just 37 seconds remaining in regulation. Caroline Uhran (Morristown, NJ/ Madison) scored off a corner pass but the goal was waved off.
Wakeland made six saves in posting her second shutout of the season, while the Hawks' keeper, King, made nine saves.
Union had a shot advantage of 21-9 with 17-4 in the second half alone. Hartwick had 12-11 advantage in corners.
Union will return to play at Bailey Field on Friday, October 21 to host LIberty League rival Rensselaer at 4 p.m. Â
