Box ScoreSCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Sophomore midfielder Michelle Roy scored in the 55th minute to lift Rensselaer to a 2-1 Liberty League field hockey victory over Union College Friday afternoon at Bailey Field.
It was the first league win for the Red Hawks (1-4 in the Liberty League), who improved to 6-7 overall. Union, which entered the weekend tied for fourth in the league with Hamilton and Vassar with a 2-3 record, fell to 8-8 overall.
Roy was open on the right corner of the net and took a feed from Kristina Baker at 55:31. Union pressed late in the contest but could not tie it up. The Red Hawks scored the first goal of the game at 9:35 as junior midfielder Emily Carroll scored her first of the year from 15 yards out in the middle.
Union tied it as this week's Co-Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week, junior forward Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs) tallied at 21:29. Trotter scored her 12th of the year picking up a loose ball in a scramble in front.
Freshman goaltender Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME/Kennebunk) made five saves in the game for Union, while senior Amanda Lund stopped 10 for the Red Hawks.
Union had a 19-12 shot advantage in the game, and a 10-9 advantage in corners.
The Dutchwomen host Vassar Saturday in an 11 a.m. Liberty League game to be played at College Park. Rensselaer will play Saturday at Skidmore in league play at 2 p.m.
