Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cheatham nets a pair of goals to lead Union to Liberty League title

Box Score

Schenectady, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2005) Senior Wade Cheatham (Edwards, CO/Vail Mountain School) scored the first two goals of the game, less than a minute apart, to lead Union to a 6-0 win over Clarkson in Liberty League men's soccer action at College Park Field. The Dutchmen scored three goals in each half and held a 21-4 shot advantage over the Golden Knights to win their fifth straight game. The win gives Union a perfect 6-0 league mark and the outright Liberty League regular season title. They improve to 12-2-2 overall while Clarkson fell to 3-9-2 overall and 2-3-1.

Union, the top offensive team in the Liberty League, took the lead for good when Cheatham scored at 14:53 in the first half for his sixth goal of the season. The ball found Mark Susko (Short Hills, NJ/Pingry School) inside the penalty box who tapped it over to Cheatham who was waiting on the right to tuck the ball past Clarkson goalie David Hennessey (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River). Less than a minute later Cheatham added on more with a rebound shot into the back of the net. The senior collected the ball after Chris Poey (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) had his initial shot blocked on the goal line by a Clarkson defender.

Poey's efforts would not be thwarted the second time around as he made it 3-0 in the 34th minute with his 13th goal of the season. After receiving the ball at the back post off a long throw in from Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA/Taft School), Poey headed it back across the front of the goal and inside the left post.

Ftorek, who had three assists on the day, picked up his third in the 53rd minute on Union's fourth goal. The sophomore sent a cross in front from the left side that Susko hunted down and converted on a diving header for his first goal of the season.

Ftorek scored in the 54th minute and Jon Bellock (Manchester, CT) added the final tally in the 74th.

Union utilized three goalies to combine for the shutout. Starter Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) made one save for the win. The Dutchmen defense did not allow a shot on goal by the Golden Knights until the 20th minute. Rob Shirley (Wrentham, MA/King Phillip) replaced Kramer in the first half and made two saves while Harris Fendell (Short Hills, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) entered the game in the final eight minutes to wrap things up.

Hennessey made three saves in the loss for the Golden Knights. He would be replaced by Mike St. Croix (Watertown, NY/Immaculate Heart Central) to start the second half. St. Croix made one save.

Union held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Dutchmen look to maintain their unblemished Liberty League mark and make it six in a row when they host St. Lawrence tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
