Box ScoreSchenectady, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2005) Union finished up Liberty League play in exciting fashion with a 1-0 win over St. Lawrence at College Park to boast a perfect 7-0 record. Play was tightly contested throughout the match until sophomore Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA) scored in the 71st minute. Both teams continued to battle to the end and the Dutchmen were able to hold on and improve their overall mark to 13-2-1. St. Lawrence suffered its first loss in league play as they fall to 4-1-2 and 6-6-2 overall.
A back and forth duel ensued from the opening whistle and neither team backed down. Chances were few in the first half but quality opportunities. Union's came first in the 11th minute off a long throw in by Ftorek to Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY) who sent a one-timer sailing just over the crossbar.
Eight minutes later St. Lawrence was denied a prime scoring chance thanks to the quick reflexes of Union goalie Rob Kramer (Westport, CT). Sean Charles (Ballston Lake, NY) eluded the Dutchmen defense and dribbled in on goal, firing a point-blank shot from 10 yards out. Kramer got a beat on the shot though and turned it aside to keep things scoreless.
Kramer came up big again with five minutes left in the opening half. Chris Lonegan (North Yarmouth, ME) fired a low shot that skipped in on goal but the freshman netminder was there to collect it.
In the 64th minute the Saints Steve Watson headed a shot wide off a direct free kick. Kramer helped his cause in goal by setting up the Dutchmen score seven minutes later. After collecting the ball Kramer sent a quick outlet to Chris Poey (Amherst, MA) at midfield. Poey took a one-touch turn and sent the ball into the penalty area. The ball stood unclaimed as St. Lawrence goalie Emilio Coletta and Ftorek ran on to it to take possession. Ftorek won the footrace and got a head on the ball just as it bounced up off the turf. He flicked it up and over Coletta, who could only turn and watch as the ball rolled in over the goal line.
St. Lawrence kept the pressure on and had one last chance to score the equalizer with under a minute to play off a throw in by Lonegan. Sean Charles collected the ball just inside the penalty box and blasted a one-timer that sailed just over the crossbar.
Coletta made two saves for the Saints while Kramer stopped five shots in the shutout win.
St. Lawrence held an 11-6 advantage in shots for the game.
