Clarkson downs Union in league opener

Schenectady, NY (October 29, 2005) The visiting Golden Knights exploded for four second period goals as freshman center Micheleen Devine scored twice in the period and assisted on two others, bolstering the victors to an 8-0 ECACHL win at Messa Rink.  Clarkson scored its first four goals at even strength, while finishing 2-for-5 on the power play.  The Golden Knights out shot Union 49-10 for the game.

Melissa Marshall scored the game's first goal at 10:32 in the first period.  Just over two minutes later Kelsey Fletcher made it 2-0, which held up as the score heading into the intermission.  Clarkson held a 17-3 shot advantage in the period and failed to convert on its only power play opportunity. 

Devine quickly made it 3-0 just 2:43 into the second period, and assisted on the following two Clarkson goals by Christina Valesente and Jessica Cloutier.  Devine, who finished with 2 goals and 3 assists in the win, scored the period's final goal when she won a face off in the Union zone, battled to control the puck and slipped a shot past freshman netminder Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL).

Clarkson managed its four second period goals on just 12 shots, while capitalizing on its lone power play opportunity with Cloutier's mark.  The Dutchwomen went 0-for-2 on the power play in the second period, managing just 2 shots during the power plays, and 5 shots overall. 

The Golden Knights, which improved to 4-2-1 overall, 1-0-0 in the ECACHL, tacked on two goals in the waning minutes of the third period.  Amanda Dittmer scored at 18:51, while Ashley Shaidle's deposited Clarkson's second power play goal in the back of the net with 4 seconds left for the 8-0 tally. 

Zirbel finished with 41 stops in net for the Dutchwomen, while Kira Hurley thwarted all 10 Union scoring opportunities in goal for the Golden Knights.

Union saw its record drop to 0-3-0 overall, 0-1-0 in ECACHL play.  With the loss the Dutchwomen fell to 0-5 all-time against Clarkson.  Union will once again seek that elusive first win of the season and win against the Golden Knights tomorrow in a 2:00 p.m scrum at Messa Rink.
