Arcidiacono rushes for 251 in Union football's 31-3 win vs. WPI

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Junior running back Tom Arcidiacono (Castleton, NY/Columbia) rushed for 251 yards and a touchdown to lead Union College to a 31-3 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Liberty League football action Saturday at Frank Bailey Field.

Union improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Liberty League, while WPI fell to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Arcidiacono, who entered the game ranked #2 in rushing in NCAA Division III with an average of 199 yards per game, tied his career high that he set earlier this season at Rochester. He had a four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and now is averaging 209.4 yards per game through five games.

Junior QB Anthony Marotti (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) passed for 174 yards, completing 13 of 24 attempts with a touchdown and an interception in the rain soaked contest. WR Steve Angiletta (Plantsville, CT/Southington), the #1 ranked receiver in the country entering the game, had five catches for 78 yards.

The Union defense was led by DL Dylan Walton-Yedlin (Seattle, WA/Lakeside), who had seven tackles, two pass deflections and a forced fumble. The defense held the Engineers to eight first downs and 132 yards in total offense.

WPI junior RB Garrett Vandette (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) had 45 yards on 14 carries. Starting quarterback Rob Pantalone (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) was 4 for 11 for 47 yards and reserve signal-caller Justin Wells (Jay, ME/Jay) was 3 for 14 for 56 yards. Freshman linebacker Matt Boudreau (Rensselaer, NY/LaSalle) had game highs of 12 tackles and 11 solo hits for the Engineers, while sophomore DB Dustin Bradway (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) had 11 tackles for the visitors.

Union opened the scoring with 9:27 remaining in the first quarter, as Ben Rapple (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) converted a 25-yard field goal to cap a 10-play, 69-yard drive in 4:10. The Dutchmen made it 10-0 on Arcidiacono's four-yard scoring run with 5:08 left in the quarter. On the first play of that drive, from the Union-5, Arcidiacono ran 84 yards to the WPI 11 to set up the eventual score.

The Dutchmen took a 17-0 lead with 2:31 elapsed in the third quarter. Marotti found junior tight end Todd Marsh (Unionville, CT/Farmington) with a seven-yard touchdown pass to wrap up a five-play, 51-yard drive that took 2:20. It remained 17-0 by halftime.

WPI got on the board with 9:04 left in the third quarter, as senior Jeremy Griffin (Waterford, CT/Waterford) kicked a 22-yard field goal. The WPI scoring drive was nine plays and 42 yards and took 3:57. But with 2:46 gone in the fourth quarter, Marotti, seeing all receiving options covered, ran 20 yards for a touchdown for a 24-3 lead. It was a six-play, 34-yard drive in exactly two minutes.

Union later added another touchdown as sophomore FB Zach Tillo (Lancaster, MA/Exeter) ran for four yards out with 7:54 left in the fourth quarter. That capped off a six-play, 58-yard drive in 3:07.

The Dutchmen had 483 net yards on the day and was successful on six of 13 third down conversion attempts.

Union is on the road for the fourth time in five games next week. The Dutchmen will play at Franklin and Marshall on October 15 at 1 p.m. WPI is idle next week and returns to action October 22 at Rochester.
