Box ScoreGENEVA, N.Y.The William Smith College field hockey team won its 10th consecutive game by a 5-2 count over Union College on McCooey Field this afternoon. Juniors Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) and Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine) paced the Herons with two goals apiece.
The Dutchwomen trailed 3-0 in the first half, but a strong second half was not enough as Union fell to 6-7 on the season.
In the sixth minute, Saucier opened the afternoon's scoring with some nifty dribbling through traffic and quick shot to the lower left corner of the cage. Dennis followed suit seven minutes later, scoring on a penalty corner off a scoop shot. Senior Amy Kuzio (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) and junior Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) earned assists on the play. Senior Tara Baker (Rome Free Academy/Lee Center, N.Y.) closed out the first half scoring when she stuffed home a cross-crease pass from Dennis in the 20th minute.
After the break, William Smith took a 4-0 lead in the 43rd minute when Dennis took a feed from first-year Charlotte Styer (Governor Mifflin/Mohnton, Pa.), spun, and placed a shot into the lower right corner of the cage.
Union finally cracked the scoring column in the 48th minute, when junior Jessica Trotter (John Burroughs/St. Louis, Mo.) tipped a shot by junior Hillary Benoit (Lincoln Sudbury/Sudbury, Mass.) a split second before it reached Heron senior goalie Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine). The redirected effort shaved the inside of the right goal post to make it a 4-1 contest.
Saucier gave William Smith another four-goal lead less than a minute later with another dribbling clinic.
Senior Kristina Gerhing (Little Falls/Little Falls, N.Y.) closed out the day's scoring, batting home a rebound in the 55th minute.
Jordan earned the win with five saves on seven shots in 66:30, while first-year Katie DeKraker (Staples/Wesport, Conn.) stopped the only shot she faced in relief. Dutchwomen first-year Elise Wakeland (Kennebunk/Arundel, Maine) turned back six shots.
Union will be home for the final five games of the regular season. Next up is a date with Elmira at Bailey Field on October 14 at 4 p.m.
