Ftorek leads Union into Liberty League title game, Union wins 5-0 in semis

SCHENECTADY, NY Liberty League Player of the Year Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA/Taft School) scored two goals to lead Union to a 5-0 victory over Skidmore in the 2005 Liberty League Semifinals Friday at Union's College Park Field.

With their ninth straight win, the Dutchmen improve to 16-2-1, while the Thoroughbreds fall to 9-6-2. The top seed Dutchmen face #2 seed St. Lawrence Saturday in the Liberty League Championship Game at 2 p.m. at College Park Field. In the previous meeting, Union downed the Saints, 1-0 in Schenectady on October 22.

The Dutchmen took a 2-0 lead into the half, as Luke LaBella (Middletown, CT/Taft School) notched his third of the year at 31:43, and Josh Butler (Cazenovia, NY/Manlius Pebble Hill) scored his first of the season with 13 seconds remaining in the first stanza. Ftorek scored goals #14 and #15 of the season at 51:48 and 69:23 respectively, and Justin Merolla (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) closed out the scoring with his third of the season at 81:22.

Starting goalkeeper Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) made eight saves in over 76 minutes of work, before reserve Rob Shirley (Wrentham, MA/King Philip) saw action and stopped two shots for Union. Jake Densen (Summit, NJ/Summit) made three saves, also coming out at the 76:28 for reserve Mike D'Aleo (Westwood, MA/Westwood), who did not make a save on the day.

Union had a 17-14 shot advantage, including 11-4 in the first half, and a 5-1 corner kick advantage for the contest.
