Cagianello scores 36 in 72-71 win vs. Washington & Jefferson

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. Senior guard John Cagianello (Wethersfield, CT/Loomis Chaffee) scored a career high and game high 36 points and senior center Darcy Bonner (Chicago, IL/Loyola Academy) pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds to lead Union to a 72-71 victory over Washington & Jefferson in non-league basketball action at the Viniar Athletic Center Monday night.

The Dutchmen improved to 4-2 on the season while the Presidents fell to 0-7.

Bonner scored the eventual game-winning basket with a layup with eight seconds remaining. Union led 68-63 with 3:51 left in the second half but the Presidents went on a 7-0 run for a 70-68 lead with 57 seconds left, led by five points by Jon Koch (New Kensington, PA/Plum). Cagianello, this week's Liberty League Guard of the Week, tied it with a jumper with 41 seconds left, and after a missed free throw, Koch made the second for a 71-70 lead with 18 seconds left to go. Bonner then made his basket 10 seconds later. After a foul and two Union missed free throws, the Presidents' full court pass went out of bounds as time expired.

Koch had a team high 24 points for Washington & Jefferson, while Josip Lucic-Jozak (Pittsburg, PA/Baldwin) added 14 and Matt Vorndran (Fort Wayne, IN/Carroll) added 10. Tony Lewis (Mayfield Heights, OH/Orange) led the guests with six rebounds.

Union had a 39-38 lead at the end of a first half. Leading 44-43 with 18:06 left in the second half, the Dutchmen went on a 13-4 run for a 57-47 lead with 10:17 left. That run featured seven points from Cagianello. W&J then had a 15-4 run in the next 4:41 to pull to within one at 62-61 with 5:36 remaining.

The Dutchmen shot 44% for the night while the Presidents shot 51%. Union had a 32-31 rebounding advantage. Cagianello is now averaging 27.8 points in six games and has three 30+ point games on the young season.

Bonner's 14 rebounds were the most by a Union player since Darcy Bonner pulled down 14 at Clarkson on February 14, 2004.

Union plays Saturday at Lehman for a 3 p.m. game, and the next home game is slated for January 6, when Union hosts the Sig Makofski Invitational (a 3 p.m. game vs. St. Joseph's in that tourney that also features SUNY Oneonta and Richard Stockton).
