Union Edges Vassar, 67-66, to Remain in Postseason Hunt

Poughkeepsie, NYJunior forward Brian Scordato gave Union a four point lead with 21 seconds left by hitting one of his two free throws and that was enough to offset Dan Forcella's three-point basket with five seconds left as Union defeated Vassar, 67-66, in a key Liberty League match-up.  The win improved Union's record to 12-10 overall, 6-5 in the league.  More importantly, it gave the Dutchmen a firm grip on fourth place in the circuit with three games remaining.  The top four teams will compete in the league's championship tournament the weekend of February 24 with the winner earning the circuit's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Junior guard John Cagianello led all scorers with his 24 points while sophomore guard Joe Mackey contributed 15 markers.  Cagianello also had five assists while freshman forward Kyle Grimm led Union with his nine rebounds.

The Dutchmen, who trailed at the half, 33-30, took the lead with 14:28 left to play when Cagianello drilled a three-point field goal and enjoyed its biggest lead of the second period, 48-39, with 12:19 left to play.  The Brewers, now 11-9 overall and 4-6 in the league, scored nine-straight points to tie the game at 48 as William Kieffer hit a layup with 9:01 on the clock.  A layup by Lawrence Avitabile gave the Brewers their final lead of the game, 61-59 with 3:06 remaining.

Cagianello produced the game's seventh tie by hitting a pair of free throws with 2:56 remaining before Mackey scored the game's next four points on a free throw and three-point basket, the tres coming with 1:28 to play.
