SCORDATO AND CAGIANELLO SPARK UNION PAST SLU, 71-64

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.Junior forward Brian Scordato scored a game-high 21 points and classmate guard John Cagianello chipped in with 19 as Union kept its hopes alive for one of four spots in next week's Liberty League championship tournament by defeating St. Lawrence, 71-64, at the Viniar Athletic Center.  The win improves the Dutchmen's circuit record to 7-6 and their overall mark to 13-11.

 

Scordato scored 12 of his points in the first half to help Union to a 34-32 advantage at the break and Cagianello netted a dozen points in the second 20 minutes to secure the victory. 

 

Down by one, 48-47, with 12 minutes remaining in the game, Union went on a 13-6 run behind Cagianlello's seven points to take a 60-51 advantage with 5:14 showing.  St. Lawrence closed to within four, 63-59, on a layup by Aaron Marshall with 2:12 left before Cagianello 's jumper with 1:31 showing was the first of four consecutive Dutchmen points that left the hosts with an eight point lead with 59 seconds left in the game.

 

Senior forward Devon Bruce, who finished with 11 points, crashed the boards with a slam dunk with 8:49 left in the first half to give Union a 23-16 lead.  However, the Saints came back as Keith Sullivan connected on a three-point field goal and Tyler Shaver followed with a layup to bring St. Lawrence back to within 23-21 at 8:04.  Baskets by Cagianello and freshman forward Kyle Grimm increased Union's lead to 27-21 with 5:19 left before the Saints came right back and eventually tied the score at 30 on Pat Delmonico's tres with 1:29 left.

 

Aaron Marshall's layup with 55 seconds to go gave the Saints a 32-30 advantage before back-to-back baskets by Scordato enabled the Dutchmen to take a 34-32 lad into the break.

 

Marshall finished with 20 points for the Saints, who are now 4-9 in the league and 6-18 overall.
