Union Falls at No. 4 Cornell, 4-1

Box Score

Ithaca, NY (Feb. 19, 2005) Union (11-20-1, 7-13) fell behind early to a strong Cornell team and was unable to recover in a 4-1 loss Saturday night at Lynah rink. The No. 4 Big Red, who have the top ranked offense in the ECACHL, built a 2-0 lead in the first period and added two power play tallies over the final two periods to hand the Dutchmen their 10th straight league loss.

Cornell got on the board first with an early goal by Matt Moulson at 2:04 of the first period. Moulson got his 17th goal of the season after Union's Scott Brady (Sutton, MA) tried to ice the puck by stuffing it underneath goaltender Kris Mayotte's (Pittsburgh, PA) pads. The puck came loose though and Moulson was right there to put it away. Mayotte finished with 25 saves.

In the same period a breakdown by Union led to Cornell's second goal at 12:37. Mayotte came behind his net to play the puck to a teammate. Shane Hynes stole the puck and sent it in front to Moulson who buried his shot into a wide open net before Mayotte could get back into position.

Union had its share of chances but Cornell goaltender David McKee came up with some impressive stops. He made a sprawling save at 14:35 on Jake Schwan (Clifton Park, NY) who got a shot off as he lay on the ice. Scott Wheeler (Camillus, NY) sent in a shot from the point that trickled past McKee but it was slow enough for the sophomore to reach behind him and stop the puck on the goal line.

In the second period Charlie Cook extended the lead to 3-0 with a power play tally at 2:00. Cook buried a slap shot from the point that rang in off the far post. At the beginning of the power play Cook sent a shot in from the same spot but Mayotte was able to glove save that one.

Union created some more scoring opportunities in the second period but again came up empty. Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) had a shot in front but was stood up by McKee. At 12:15 Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT) shot the puck between McKee's legs during a 2-on-1 chance but again the netminder slowed the shot down and was able to reach behind and cover.

Moulson got the hat trick at 7:57 of the third period with another power play goal. His shot from the point found its way by Mayotte who was screened in front on the play.

Union's Jonathan Poirier (St. Jermone, QUE) spoiled McKee's shutout bid with a high shot between the face off circles that cleared the goaltender's left shoulder. Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) won the puck behind Cornell's goal and put a centering pass on Poirier's tape. McKee made 22 saves on the night.

Cornell finished 2-for-4 on the power play while Union came up empty in five attempts.

Union closes out the regular season at home next weekend beginning with a showdown against Yale on Friday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m.
