Union Falls to Clarkson in Overtime Finale

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Mar. 6, 2005) Union's bid to advance to the second round of the ECACHL playoffs fell short as they suffered a 4-3 overtime loss to Clarkson in the third and final game of the quarterfinal series. Sophomore Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) scored a pair of power play goals to help lead the Dutchmen back after they had fallen behind twice throughout the game. The two teams combined for seven goals in a back and forth shootout after putting up just four in games one and two. Union closes out its season at 13-22-2 with four straight overtime games.

As they did in the previous two games, Clarkson struck first with a goal from Chris Brekelmans at 16:58 of the first period. The junior took a feed at the point from Matt Curley and fired a slap shot that deflected off a Dutchmen defender's stick and over the shoulder of goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK). This came after a Union goal by Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) was waved off because of a crease violation.

Bouchard tied the game at 1-1 with 56 seconds left in the first for his first of two power play goals. He was stopped on his first attempt by Clarkson goaltender Dustin Traylen, but Bouchard's persistence paid off as the second effort snuck by. Seney set his teammate up with the chance in front after a cross ice pass from Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE). The goal ended a nine-game goal scoring drought for Bouchard.

In the second period senior captain Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) showed what type of leader he has been all season by scoring Union's go ahead goal at 4:10. He sent a high wrist shot into the left side after taking a pass on the tape from Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT). Clarkson then responded with a pair of tallies in the same period to go up 3-2 beginning with Jay Latulippe's power play goal at 8:52. Less than two minutes later Max Kolu got his first goal of the season with a high slap shot from the top of the zone that sailed over Mrazek's shoulder.

Bouchard picked up his second goal with 3:33 left in regulation after the puck redirected off the blade of his skate from a blast by Webb in the right face off circle.

In the overtime session Clarkson's Shawn Weller scored the game winning goal with 1:42 remaining, redirecting a shot in front, through traffic that came from Brekelmans at the point.

Mrazek finished with a career-high 40 saves while Traylen made 31. Union went 2-of-7 on the power play for the first time since the game against Yale when they also tallied two power play goals in seven attempts.

This was the first quarterfinal series in ECACHL playoff history where all three games went into overtime.
