Saints Spoil Dutchmen Liberty League Opener

Schenectady, NY (April 2, 2005) Union's start to Liberty League play was a disappointing one as they fell to St. Lawrence 16-7 at Frank Bailey Field in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen were outshot 46-24, including an 18-4 advantage in the first quarter when the Saints opened up a 5-1 lead. Union (4-5, 0-1) received a two-goal effort from senior Mike Sparico (Riverside, CT) and sophomore Bill Condon (West Hartford, CT).

St. Lawrence senior Alex Moore gave his team a 3-0 lead with the first three strikes of the game. Moore finished with three goals along with teammate Nick Mastine. Trailing by five Condon got Union on the board with 3:03 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Saints reeled off three straight, capped off by a Brendan Lynch goal with 8:41 to play. Sparcio gave the Dutchmen their second goal 26 seconds later on the man advantage to make it 8-2 off a feed from Pete Gross (Larchmont, NY), who finished with three helpers on the day. Sparcio added another man-up goal with 1:14 left to play in the third.

Condon closed out the scoring with 3:46 left in the game following a goal by teammate Dan Myerow (Sudbury, MA).

Starting goaltender Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT) finished with nine saves before being replaced in the second by Will Tamm (Millbrook, NY) who made eight.

Justin Demuth stopped three shots to pick up the win. He was replaced by Brendan Dooley, who also made three saves, to start the fourth quarter.

Union continues Liberty League play next Saturday, April 9th at Skidmore for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
