Union Edges Hamilton 7-5 for Liberty League Title

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (April 22, 2005) Senior Molly Flanagan (Simsbury, CT) scored twice in the second half, including the game-winner to give Union a 7-5 victory over Hamilton Friday afternoon. Flanagan's goal with 6:23 remaining in regulation broke a 5-5 tie and a solid defensive effort the rest of the way kept the Continentals in check. With the win Union (9-3, 7-1) captured the Liberty League regular season title and will serve as host for the upcoming league tournament.

Union jumped out to an early lead on a goal by Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA) just 19 seconds into the game. Just over 10 minutes later Tanya Davis (Fayetteville, NY) found the back of the net off a feed from Flanagan. Hamilton's Inga Stots got her team on the board at 14:53 on a free position attempt to cut the lead to one. Cuozzo regained the two-goal advantage for the Dutchwomen 17 seconds later to close out first half scoring. Keri Messa (Saratoga Springs, NY) assisted on the goal.

Hamilton came out in the second half and scored two quick goals to tie the game at 3-3. Jen McGowan got the first 18 seconds in with Stots following suit 47 seconds later. The two teams traded goals after that beginning with Cuozzo's third of the game at 25:50. McGowan answered for the Continentals 38 seconds later.

Flanagan's first goal gave the advantage back to Union at 23:48 before Liz Longley knotted the game once again at 5-5 just over 10 minutes later. Flanagan put Union ahead for good; scoring in transition after goalie Rachel Beckman (Needham, MA) stopped a shot from Hamilton's Caitlin Jacobs on the other end. Beckman, who finished with 11 saves, made her biggest one of the game with 3:41 left by stopping Suzy Belmont on a free position shot from less than 15 feet away. Union held on to the ball after that and Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA) scored with two seconds left to wrap things up.

Hamilton edged Union in shots 21-17 and owned the edge in ground balls by the same count. Hilary Gamble made eight saves in the loss as the Continentals fall to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the Liberty League.

Union will play its final home game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. against St. John Fisher.
