Union Closes out Regular Season with 18-10 Win at Oneonta

Oneonta, NY (April 26, 2005) After conceding two quick goals to start the game Union responded with 10 unanswered on its way to a 18-10 win at Oneonta in the regular season finale. Senior Molly Flanagan (Simsbury, CT) scored three of her five goals during the run to help the Dutchwomen win their tenth straight and improve to 11-3 while the Red Dragons fell to 2-9.

Oneonta took its only lead of the game with a goal from Erin Maybeck to start things off at 28:04 on a free position shot. Jessica Garabedian made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal 10 seconds later. Union went to work on Red Dragon goalie Jocelyn Grafstein after that with Flanagan starting things off at 24:54 by scoring on a free position shot of her own. Freshman Erin Lawson (Flourtown, PA) tied the game at 2-2 over a minute later with her first of two goals.

Union took the lead at 22:14 with a goal from Tanya Davis (Fayetteville, NY) on another free position attempt. The Dutchwomen finished 5-of-7 on free position shots for the game.

Alexandra Toney (Bayville, NY) gave Union a two-goal lead on her first goal of the game that was assisted by Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA). Toney finished with three goals while Cuozzo had two goals and two assists. Her second helper came earlier in the game on Lawson's goal. Cuozzo's goals came later in the half with under five minutes to play. Her first tally came at 4:38 off an assist from Robyn Ross (Newton, MA) which would prove to be the game-winner. Her second goal came with 17 seconds to play before the half. Lawson closed out the first half scoring with four seconds left to make it a 13-4 game.

Flanagan started up the scoring once again for Union in the second half at 27:23 on a free position attempt that was followed by Toney's final goal just under one minute later.

Two of Oneonta's six, second half goals came on free position attempts with less than a minute to play. Garabedian scored her second of the game with 48 seconds left, which was followed by Miarkella Sazaklis' goal with 13 remaining. The Red Dragons finished 5-for-11 on their free position shots.

Union outshot Oneonta 38-22 for the game, including a 28-8 first half advantage. Grafstein finished with 15 saves in the loss while Rachel Beckman (Needham, MA) and Stephanie Burlton (Coquitlam, BC) combined for the win. Beckman made just one save while Burlton recorded five.

Up next Union will host the Liberty League Tournament. The Dutchwomen face Hamilton in the first semi-final game on Saturday, May 7th at 11:00 a.m. The second game will pit Skidmore against St. Lawrence at 1:30 p.m. The championship game will take place on Sunday, May 8th at 12:00 p.m. All games will be played at the College Park Field.
