Flanagan leads Union into women's lacrosse title game

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. Senior midfielder Molly Flanagan (Simsbury, CT/Loomis Chaffee) and senior attack Kathy Dolezal (Clearwater, FL/Williston Northampton) scored three goals each to lead top-seed Union to an 11-7 triumph over #4 seed Hamilton in a Liberty League Women's Lacrosse Championship semifinal game Saturday at Union's Frank Bailey Field.

The victory for Union, ranked #16 in the latest IWLCA national poll, improved to 12-3 and won for the 11th straight game. Hamilton fell to 9-7 on the season. The Dutchwomen face St. Lawrence Sunday at 12 p.m. for the Liberty League title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

Flanagan had four points, including an assist, and Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional) and Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) scored two goals each in the win. Union goalie Rachel Beckman (Needham, MA/Needham) made seven saves. Union had a 34-21 shot advantage for the game, and won 12 draw controls.

Jen McGowan (Jericho, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) scored three goals for the Continentals, while Liz Longley (Plymouth, MA/Duxbury) had four points, including three assists. Caitlin Jacobs (Braintree, VT/Randolph) scored two goals for Hamilton. Kalley Greer (Whitby, Ontario/Anderson Vocational) made 17 saves for the Continentals.

The Continentals took a 2-0 lead in the first 6:52, and led 3-1 with 20:37 left in the first half after McGowan's first goals of the day. After two goals by Cuozzo tied it for Union at 3-3 with 14:45 left in the first half, Jacobs scored twice for a 5-3 Hamilton lead with 7:09 left. Flanagan scored at 6:57 and 5:06 then Kathy Dolezal (Clearwater, FL/Williston-Northampton) gave Union the lead at 6-5 with 1:40 remaining in the first stanza. McGowan scored 3:34 into the second half to tie the game at 6-6, but Union scored the next four, two from Dolezal followed by two from Cronan, for a 10-6 lead with 4:01 left to play in the second half.
