Union wins Liberty League Women's Lacrosse title and NCAA bid

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. Senior midfielder Molly Flanagan (Simsbury, CT/Loomis Chaffee) scored six goals and assisted on three others as 16th ranked Union College won the Liberty League Women's Lacrosse Championship with an 18-6 victory over St. Lawrence Sunday at Frank Bailey Field.

The victory, Union's 12th straight, earned the Dutchwomen the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. It will be the third trip to the NCAA for the program. Union, the top seed in the Liberty League tournament, improved to 13-3  while St. Lawrence, the third seed, fell to 9-5.

Flanagan, the league's Player of the Year and the pre-season Player of the Year by US Lacrosse, helped turn a 3-0 deficit into a 7-5 Union lead at halftime. She wound up with 10 shots, eight on net, nine ground balls, five draw controls, and four caused turnovers. She now has 51 goals and 17 assists for 68 points. Kathy Dolezal (Clearwater, FL/Williston Northampton) had four goals and an assist along with 11 shots on goal and nine ground balls for Union, while Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional) scored four goals and led the Dutchwomen with 10 ground balls. Tanya Davis (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and Alexandra Toney (Bayville, NY/Locust Valley) scored twice each for Union.

Kathryn Durki (Canton, NY/Hugh C. Williams) led St. Lawrence with three goals and Carolyn Cherry (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) scored two tallies for the Saints.

Union outshot St. Lawrence, 41-17 for the game, including 24- 6 in the second half. The teams each won 13 draw controls, while Union had a 53-39 ground ball advantage. St. Lawrence goaltender Rebecca Timbers (Underhill, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) made 12 saves in over 43 minutes of play, while reserve netminder Cynthia Saul (Dedham, MA/St. Mark's) stopped four shots. Union goalie Rachel Beckman (Needham, MA/Needham) made six saves.

St. Lawrence led 3-0 with 16:08 left in the first half, highlighted by two goals by Durki. The Saints later had a 5-3 lead when Durki scored her third of the day with 6:43 left in the first half. But goals by Dolezal at 4:10 and Cuozzo at 2:44 tied it for the Dutchwomen. Flanagan scored with 44 seconds remaining and again with just 32 seconds left in the first half for a 7-5 Union lead. The Dutchwomen scored the next 11 goals of the game.

This is the seventh time in eight years that Union will compete in a post-season tournament. The Dutchwomen have also competed in the NCAA's in 1999 and 2002. Pairings for the 2005 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships will be announced tonight at 9 p.m. on College Sports Television. Play begins with First Round games Wednesday, May 11 on campus sites, and the Regionals are May 14-15 on campus sites. The College of New Jersey will host the Finals on May 21-22.
