Box ScoreSCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Sophomore forward Chris Poey (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) tied a school record with four goals to lead Union College to a 5-1 victory over SUNY New Paltz in the 2005 Union Classic Men's Soccer Tournament.
Poey tied the Union mark that was set in 1958 and tied in 1976, as he becomes the first Dutchmen to score four goals in a game in 29 years.
Senior midfielder Wade Cheatham (Edwards, CO/Vail Mountain) scored the other goal and added an assist for the Dutchmen, while Jon Bellock (Manchester, CT/Loomis Chaffee), Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA/Taft School) also had assists in the contest for Union (2-1).
Senior Jason Irish (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro Central) had the lone goal for the Hawks (3-2). Paolo Capparelli (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketchum) assisted on the Irish tally.
Freshman goalkeeper Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) made two saves in over 81 minutes of play, while fellow freshman Rob Shirley (Wrentham, MA/King Phillip) did not make a save in nearly nine minutes in net for Union. Patrick Carlucci (Goshen, NY/Goshen Central) stopped two shots for New Paltz. Union outshot the guests, 14-8.
New Paltz took a 1-0 lead just 5:12 into the contest on the Irish goal, but Poey scored his first of the day at 22:14 for a 1-1 score at half. Poey tallied at 46:22 and 53:06 for a 3-1 lead, and added another at 82:46 after Cheatham's score at 79:58.
Union will face Mt. St. Mary in the pre-determined schedule on Sunday at 12 p.m., while New Paltz faces Rennselaer at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
