Box ScoreGENEVA, N.Y.The Union College women's soccer team topped Elmira College, 6-1, in the second game of the annual Heron Cup, hosted by William Smith College. The 12th-ranked Dutchwomen got goals from six different players.
Union (3-0) scored the first five goals of the contest, including a goal and an assist from sophomore midfielder Caitlin Cuozzo (King Phillip/Norfolk, Mass.). The Dutchwomen also got first half goals from senior forward Erica Eisenhut (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.), junior midfielder Jenna Ondash (New Canaan/New Canaan, Conn.), senior forward Cassandra Mariani (Morris Catholic/Boonton, N.J.), and junior forward Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead/Marblehead, Mass.).
The Soaring Eagles (0-3-0) finally broke through in the 42nd minute when first-year forward Moira Ghent (Berkshire School/New Boston, N.H.) knocked a shot off the crossbar that bounced straight down to sophomore forward Natasha Pyzocha (Wilton-Lyndboro/New Boston, N.H.) who drove it home.
In the second half, Union continued to pressure Elmira, taking 12 shots on goal, but only first-year forward Ashley Brown's (Suffield Academy/Plainville, Conn.) offering in the 84th minute found the back of the net.
First-year goalie Molly Hamel (Greeley/North Yarmouth, Mass.) made 11 saves in 45 minutes of relief work for Elmira.
Union will face Gettysburg at 11 a.m., on Sept. 11, during the second day of the Heron Cup, while Elmira will square off with the host Herons, who trumped the Bullets 1-0 this morning, at 2 p.m.
