Box ScoreRochester, NY (Sept. 15, 2005) Union and Medaille battled to a 1-1 draw in double overtime Thursday evening under the lights at Bishop Kearney High School. The Dutchmen came back to tie the game in the 39th minute on a goal by junior Hugo Fernandez-Davila (Latham, NY/Champagnat) but neither team could tack on the go-ahead score in a physical contest that featured four yellow cards and a combined 30 fouls.
Union controlled play in the midfield during the early going but it was the Mavericks who scored first on a goal by Mike Rhodes in the 28th minute. The sophomore chipped Union goaltender Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) from 30 yards out as Kramer got caught coming out to play the ball.
Fernandez-Davila responded just over 10 minutes later with his second goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1. He headed home a pass from Craig Williams (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) off of a free kick on the right side to beat Medaille goalie Yanni Craig.
Union and Medaille both had goals called back later in the game due to offside calls. The Mavericks go-ahead score was negated with just under 10 minutes to play in regulation as Cory Cwiklinski sent a shot inside the right post after collecting the ball off a free kick. The Dutchmen's call back was a bit more distressing, coming with 23 seconds left to play in the first overtime session when Luke LaBella (Middletown, CT/Taft School) took a lead pass toward goal from Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA/Taft School) and shot it straight down the middle past Craig.
Kramer made four saves for the Dutchmen while Craig came up with five for the Mavericks.
Union held a slight 16-12 advantage in shots.
Union returns home for their next match to host Worcester State on Sunday, September 18 at 6:00 p.m.
