Worcester, MA The Worcester Polytechnic Institute field hockey defeated Union College, 3-1, in a late afternoon game at WPI's Alumni Field.
WPI is now 4-1, and with the win surpasses its total victory count of 2004 when it finished 3-14. Union is now 2-3. WPI outshot the visitors, 20-10.
The home team got on the board with a goal by senior back and co-captain Sarah Stout (Bloomingburg, NY) at 11:30 into the game.
It was 1-0, WPI, at halftime. But with just 3:10 gone in the second half, junior forward Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO) tied matters at 1-1 for Union. The goal was unassisted.
The score remained that way until WPI grad student Megan Holmes (Coeur d'Alene, ID) tallied with sophomore forward Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) assisting with just 15:20 remaining.
The final WPI goal came about 5 minutes later, with 9:50 to go, as sophomore midfielder Stacey Mohr (Tyngsboro, MA) scored. That goal was unassisted.
Union was pressing towards the end, but WPI held on.
Senior Jessica Farrrell (Baldwinville, MA) recorded 5 saves and was credited with the victory. She is now 3-0 on the season. For Union, freshman goalkeeper Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME) recorded 10 saves.
Union continues play on the road Wednesday, September 21 at Utica for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
