Arcidiacono rushes for 250 in Union's 41-28 win at Rochester

Box Score

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Junior running back Tom Arcidiacono (Castleton, NY/Columbia) rushed for a career-best 250 yards on 38 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Union College to a 41-28 victory over the University of Rochester in Liberty League football action at Fauver Stadium Saturday.

The Dutchmen improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League, while the Yellowjackets fell to 1-3 and 0-1 in the league.

Arcidiacono's total of 250 tied Kojo Attah's mark for the fourth most rushing yards in Union history, and it was the most since George Beebe's school record 272 vs. Rochester in November of 2000. Arcidiacono had rushing TDs of six, one and 17 yards in the victory.

Union wide receiver Steve Angiletta (Plantsville, CT/Southington) had eight catches for 160 yards and a 65-yard touchdown reception. Junior quarterback Anthony Marotti (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) was 16 for 29 for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Marotti now has 97 pass attempts on the season without an interception.

Rochester RB Matt Bielecki was 24 for 135 yards and two TDs, while QB Aaron Molisani was 8 for 20 for 112 yards, but threw three interceptions. Nate Gibbons had 44 yards on three catches.

The Yellowjackets opened the scoring with a 20-yard scoring strike from Molisani to Tom Shay. The four-play, 50-yard drive took 2:07 and was the first drive of the game.

Angiletta put the Dutchmen on the board on the next drive, Union's first of the contest. On the first play of Union's first drive, Marotti pitched to tight end Ryan Perry (E. Greenbush, NY/Columbia), and the former quarterback found Angiletta open on the right side for a 65-yard touchdown score and a 7-7 tie.

Rochester took the 14-7 lead when Bielecki had a one-yard run with 6:16 left in the first quarter, capping a 12-play, 73-yard drive that took 6:19. But the Dutchmen tied it with 3:23 left in the first stanza, as Arcidiacono ran it in from six yards out.

On a third-down, Bielecki ran for 40 yards for the Yellowjackets, and after the kick failed, the hosts held a 20-14 lead with 2:08 gone in the second quarter. But Union took the lead for good late in the second quarter, with a 13-play, 59-yard drive that took 4:42. Arcidiacono ran for one yard out for a 21-20 halftime lead after the Pat Cummings (Nashua, NH/Nashua) kick.

On the opening drive of the third quarter, the Dutchmen opened it up to a 28-20 lead. Marotti found Perry for a five-yard score, to cap a nine-play, 71-yard drive in 2:54. Arcidiacono had a 30-yard run on a third-and-four during the drive.

Rochester took the ensuing kickoff, but on a first down from the Union-15, the Yellowjackets' Bielecki fumbled and it was recovered by Union's Will Holliday (Brattleboro, VT/Union) at the Dutchmen-15 with 10 minutes left in the third.

Twelve plays and 89 yards later, Arcidiacono had his third score of the day, a 17-yard run that ended a 5:42 drive and made it 35-20 Union with 4:18 left in the third.

Earlier in that quarter, with 10:11 left to play in the third, Arcidiacono broke his own personal record with his 227th rushing yard of the day. His previous high of 226 came against Coast Guard on October 23 of last season.

After a missed field goal attempt by Union with 11:29 left in the fourth, Rochester took over on its own 22. But a Molisani pass was intercepted by Vito Pellerito (Pompano Beach, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) at the UR-42, and he brought it back to the 22. Four plays later, Marotti found Paul Deguire (Watervliett, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) with a one yard touchdown pass, making it 41-20 Union.

The Yellowjackets completed the scoring on the next drive. Molisani hit David Ferris from four yards out with 6:19 remaining in the fourth to complete an 11-play, 59-yard drive and make it 41-28 Union.

Union had 519 yards of offense on the day, including 296 on the ground, while posting 82 offensive plays. The Yellowjackets had 235 on the ground but just 112 through the air.

Senior Chris Nappi (Scotia, NY/Niskayuna) and Jesse Smith (Worcester, MA/St. John's) led the Dutchmen with five tackles each, while Jim Milks made nine hits for the Yellowjackets.

Union returns to action for another Liberty League road game, Saturday, October 1 at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at 2 p.m.
