Troy, NY- The University of Southern Maine got a first half goal from Adam Bial (Wenham, MA/Hamilton-Wenham) and goalkeeper Chris Willard (Hampton, CT/Parish Hill) made it stand up, stopping all six shots on goal as the Huskies defeated Union College, 1-0, in the season-opening Second Annual Red Hawks-Dutchmen Men's Soccer Classic held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
Southern Maine broke out on top with just 6:50 left in the first half when Bial, a junior forward, collected a loose ball at the eight-yard line on the left side and scored. USM held the lead despite being outshot 13-2 in the half.
Union controlled the ball for much of the second half as well, outshooting the Huskies 12-5, but the Dutchmen could not find the back of the net.
Willard made two saves in the first half and four in the second for the win while freshman Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) made two saves, both in the second half, for the Dutchmen, including a stop on a 2-on-1 early in the second half.
