Box ScoreTROY, NY- Union College scored two first half goals and used a dominant
second half defense to claim victory over SUNY Institute of Technology
(SUNYIT) in the final game of the Second Annual Red Hawks-Dutchmen Classic
held at Harkness Field on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
(RPI). With the victory, Union evened its record at 1-1-0 and finished in
third place in the four-team event. SUNYIT falls to 0-2-0 and places fourth.
Senior midfielder Wade Cheatham (Edwards, CO/Vail Mountain) put Union ahead
with 18:41 remaining in the first half when he dribbled through the middle
of the defense before sailing the ball over the head of SUNYIT goalie Alec
Schmitt (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont).
Sophomore Andrew Jacobson (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) doubled Union's lead
scoring three minutes later, on a beautifully delivered pass from teammate
Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY/Canisius). Pietrak, who is also a sophomore,
sent a corner kick sailing into the middle of the pack, where a leaping
Jacobson headed the ball past Schmitt.
In goal, the Dutchmen saw three keepers combine for the shutout. Starter
Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) made seven saves in 57:51 to earn the
win. For the Wildcats, Schmitt finished with two saves in 45:00 before
being relieved by Andy Korhun (Latham, NY/Shaker). He finished with five
saves in the second half.
Union plays its home-opener in the first game of the Union Classic on Saturday, September 10th at 12:00 p.m. RPI takes on Mt. Saint Mary in the second game at 2:30 p.m.
