Union Blanks SUNYIT in Final Day of Red Hawks-Dutchmen Classic

Box Score

TROY, NY-  Union College scored two first half goals and used a dominant

second half defense to claim victory over SUNY Institute of Technology

(SUNYIT) in the final game of the Second Annual Red Hawks-Dutchmen Classic

held at Harkness Field on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

(RPI).  With the victory, Union evened its record at 1-1-0 and finished in

third place in the four-team event.  SUNYIT falls to 0-2-0 and places fourth.

Senior midfielder Wade Cheatham (Edwards, CO/Vail Mountain) put Union ahead

with 18:41 remaining in the first half when he dribbled through the middle

of the defense before sailing the ball over the head of SUNYIT goalie Alec

Schmitt (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont).

Sophomore Andrew Jacobson (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) doubled Union's lead

scoring three minutes later, on a beautifully delivered pass from teammate

Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY/Canisius).  Pietrak, who is also a sophomore,

sent a corner kick sailing into the middle of the pack, where a leaping

Jacobson headed the ball past Schmitt.

In goal, the Dutchmen saw three keepers combine for the shutout.  Starter

Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) made seven saves in 57:51 to earn the

win.  For the Wildcats, Schmitt finished with two saves in 45:00 before

being relieved by Andy Korhun (Latham, NY/Shaker).  He finished with five

saves in the second half.

Union plays its home-opener in the first game of the Union Classic on Saturday, September 10th at 12:00 p.m. RPI takes on Mt. Saint Mary in the second game at 2:30 p.m.
