Schenectady, NY—Freshman
Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI) scored with less than three minutes in the third period to bring Union (2-12-1) back in a 2-2 tie at home against Robert Morris (1-13-1). Pocock had both goals for her second multi-point outing of the season. It was Union's first tie of the season and first home game since Nov. 5.
Robert Morris jumped out to an early lead at 2:16 of the opening period when Kathryn Traynor scored her fifth goal of the season. Traynor took a pass from Morgan Beikirch at the edge of the right face-off circle and lifted a shot over the left shoulder of Union goaltender
Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL).
Union came back to make it a 1-1 game at 12:33 on Pocock's first goal. She collected the puck in the neutral zone and skated in on net to the right of Robert Morris goaltender Brianne McLaughlin. Pocock came across the slot and beat McLaughlin with a wrist shot for her fourth goal of the season.
Things remained even through the second period as neither goaltender was willing to concede the go-ahead tally. McLaughlin made a pad save on Pocock at 5:36 following a Union rush. Zirbel shut down the Colonials on a two-on-one break at 13:14 and made a glove save on Traynor at 16:42.
Traynor continued to shoot the puck in the third period and her persistence paid off at 3:35 as she scored her second goal of the game to regain the lead for Robert Morris. She connected from the same spot on her first goal, beating Zirbel over her left shoulder.
McLaughlin kept her team on top just over two minutes later, making back-to-back saves on
Maeve Kehoe (Chelsea, QUE). The lead remained for most of the third period until Pocock came through at 17:28. She collected the puck behind the Robert Morris goal after a shot by
Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) sailed high. Pocock came around to the left side and beat McLaughlin with a shot to the inside far post.
Union outshot Robert Morris 3-0 in the overtime session. The last chance came from Nichols with four seconds left but her shot from the slot was right at McLaughlin for an easy stop.
Robert Morris outshot Union 34-32.
Zirbel made 32 saves for Union. It was her seventh game of the season with more than 30 stops. On the other end, McLaughlin stopped 30 shots for the Colonials.
Union and Robert Morris will battle again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
