Cuozzo, Dutchwomen defeat St. John Fisher, 2-0

SCHENECTADY, NY-  Led by a goal and an assist from junior Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/ King Phillip Regional), the Union College women's soccer team handed a 2-0 defeat to St. John Fisher at College Park Field Sunday afternoon. The Dutchwomen improve to 5-2-2 on the season, while the Cardinals drop to 5-4-1.

Both teams played a tight first half, with Union holding a 3-2 shot advantage. The Dutchwomen broke open the second half with a goal by freshman Elizabeth Ryan (Ludlow, MA/ Cathedral) at 61:29. Ryan's goal, a redirect of a cross from Cuozzo, marked the first of her career.

Cuozzo's goal came less than three minutes later when she converted a pass from Ashley Brown (Plainfield, CT/ Suffield Academy), sending in a high shot from 20 yards out that crossed to the right of Cardinals' goaltender Ashley Martin (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus). Martin had replaced starting keeper Stacey Gable (Lake Shore, NY/ Derby) at the half.

Union freshman goalkeeper Mia Simone (Rexford, NY/ Academy of the Holy Names) made four saves in the shutout. Gable made one save in the first half for the Cardinals, while Martin stopped six shots in the second stanza.

Union outshot St. John Fisher, 20-6, in the game and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Dutchwomen are back in action on Friday, October 6, when they travel to cross-town rival Rensselaer for a 6 p.m. Liberty League contest. St. John Fisher hosts Alfred University on October 4 in a 7 p.m. Empire Eight game.
