Men's Soccer gets back on track, downs Elmira, 2-0

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College men's soccer team got back to its winning ways with a 2-0 win over Elmira College in non-conference action at College Park Field Tuesday evening. The Dutchmen improve to 8-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Liberty League play. Elmira drops to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8.

The Dutchmen outshot the visiting Purple Eagles 10-0 in the first half, but Elmira starting goaltender Jon DePrimo (Elmira, NY/ Southside) stopped all four shots on net. The Dutchmen found themselves stymied by seven offside calls in the half.

Union senior midfielder Hugo Fernandez-Davila (Latham, NY/ Champagnat) broke the scoreless tie at the 49:27 mark when he controlled a cross from freshman Ryan Banagan (Albany, NY/ Bethlehem Central) and powered his shot past Pat Nugent (Dedham, MA/ Catholic Memorial) who had entered the game midway through the first half, replacing the injured DePrimo.

Junior Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY/ Canisius High) gave the Dutchmen an insurance goal two minutes later sending a shot from the top right of the box into the extreme left side of the net. Freshman John Mara (Concord, MA/ Middlesex) fed Pietrak the ball to earn his first collegiate point.

Union goaltender Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/ Staples) made one second-half save to earn his fifth shutout of the season. Nugent made one save in the loss.

Union maintained a 15-0 advantage in corner kicks while outshooting the Soaring Eagles 19-4. Union fell victim to 12 offsides calls in the second half for a game-total of 19.

Union is back in action on Saturday, October 14, when the Dutchmen travel to Skidmore for a 3 p.m. Liberty League game. Elmira plays at RIT Saturday in a noon Empire 8 conference game.
