Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Dutchmen skate to 2-2 overtime draw with RIT

SCHENECTADY, NYThe Union College men's hockey team played to a 2-2 overtime draw with visiting Rochester Institute of Technology in the Dutchmen's home opener at Messa Rink Saturday evening. The Dutchmen outshot the Tigers, 49-27, and are undefeated through the first three games of the season.

Sophomore Steve Pinizzotto (Mississauga, ONT) gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at 8:24 of the first period when he connected with a pass from Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, QUE) and sent the shot in to the left of Union goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK).

Union's T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) answered back at 8:06 of the second period with a power play goal. Sophomore Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) found Fox open on the right side, and Fox buried the puck past RIT goaltender Jocelyn Guimond (Quebec City, QUE).

Fox connected with sophomore Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) to give Union a 2-1 lead less than three minutes later with a pass across the slot to DiMarzo, who netted his first goal of the season.

RIT's Al Mazur (Burnaby, BC) knotted the game at two each at 14:39 in the second, as he tipped in a pass across the crease from Pinizzotto.

Both teams had several chances the third period, as Union outshot the Tigers 15-7 in the stanza. RIT held a slim shot margin in overtime at 3-1.

Guimond made a season-high 47 saves for the Tigers (0-2-1), while Mrazek stopped 25 shots for the Dutchmen (2-0-1).

"Their goalie played a heck of a game," said head coach Nate Leaman. "I thought the guys battled hard, worked hard. It's still early in the season. We have some things to work on, and we have five days this week to work on them before heading to Northeastern."

Union is back in action on Saturday, October 21 when the Dutchmen travel to Northeastern for a 7 p.m. game. Union is back at Messa Rink on November 3 and 4 to open ECAC Hockey League play against Quinnipiac and Princeton.
